Abstract

This article analyzes sustainable business management in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Argentina, focusing on its environmental, social, economic, and governance dimensions. Using a mixed method approach including a review of literature, reports, and documents from business chambers, along with semi structured interviews with entrepreneurs from different sectors and questionnaires directed at key business stakeholders in the Greater Buenos Aires area challenges and opportunities in adopting sustainable practices are identified. The study was conducted on a sample of twenty-three companies2. Among the main findings, 72% of the surveyed SMEs3 expressed interest in receiving advice and training in sustainability. However, significant barriers to adopting sustainable practices were identified, such as lack of financing, lack of
knowledge about environmental and social management tools, and resistance to change. Additionally, the most valued sources of advice for entrepreneurs were the government, universities, and specialized consulting firms. The study highlights the need for knowledge transfer strategies and technical assistance to promote the adoption of sustainable management tools. It also emphasizes the importance of public policies and economic incentives that support the transition to more sustainable
business models, allowing SMEs to improve their environmental and social performance. From a triple-impact approach, the study concludes that integrating sustainable strategies reduces operating costs, opens markets, and strengthens SMEs’ competitiveness and resilience. Despite existing challenges, adopting these practices represents a key opportunity to transform Argentina’s productive sector, aligning it with the Sustainable Development Goals and global trends. Through a mixed-method approach that combines a review of academic literature, reports, and documents from business chambers with semi-structured interviews with entrepreneurs from different sectors and questionnaires directed at key stakeholders in the business sector of the Greater Buenos Aires area, challenges and opportunities in adopting sustainable practices are identified.
