Abstract

On October 2, 2026, as part of the 5th Sociology Conference organized by the Department of Sociology (FACSO-UNSJ), we met with Dr. Lucía Wegelin and Dr. Mercedes Krause to discuss the multiple contemporary crises. Taking as our starting point the effects of the rupture, in contemporary society, of the bond between capitalism and democracy forged in the aftermath of the Second World War, the conversation revolved around the neoliberal dynamics that individualize subjects and hold them responsible for their own fate, thereby shifting the structural causes of social discontent away from capitalism and onto democracy and affecting how democracy is valued. In this context, the researchers, Wegelin drawing on critical theory and Krause on social phenomenology, pointed out the difficulties of perceiving and sustaining the common, that is, of recognizing the other and the relations of interdependence that sustain our social life. At the same time, they highlighted the lessons of feminisms, the role of academia and the political challenges involved in building, within and across our differences, shared spaces where individualized experience can be reconnected with its conditions of constitution and, from there, a political path toward a better future can be explored.
