Abstract

With the certainty that a diversity of worlds exists that we neither see, nor hear, nor smell, much less understand—because all the categorical frameworks we have inherited are insufficient to name them and always, in some way, betray the binding spirituality—this article invites us to reflect on the daily, resilient, and life-giving work of communities, carried out by individual or collective makers with a wealth of knowledge embedded in lineages, mandates, gestures, passions, routines, and techniques. Guided by the hypothesis that artisanal practice operates and contests its meanings within several simultaneous ontological regimes, this article proposes to open a space for reflection on handicrafts, artisans, and artisanal trades, from a relational perspective and taking into account the debates surrounding the place of crafts in the world of art and design.

Author Biography

Patricia Dreidemie, National University of Río Negro (UNRN) National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) Patagonian Furrows Civil Association

She holds a PhD in Anthropological Linguistics from the University of Buenos Aires and a Master's degree in Discourse Analysis (UBA). She is a Researcher at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET), a Full Professor in the Linguistics Department at the National University of Río Negro (Argentina), and the current Director of the Center for Studies of Literature, Language, its Learning and Teaching (CELLAE) at the same university. She is a member of the Network for Information and Discussion on Archaeology and Heritage (RIDAP). She works on rural development and technology transfer projects with peasant, Indigenous, and migrant communities, studying communalization processes and ethnically based socio-productive networks through ethnographic fieldwork in Patagonia and Cuyo. She specializes in the traditional handicrafts sector. She coordinated the first survey of artisans in the Sierras de Valle Fértil (San Juan, Argentina), and currently co-directs, together with Dr. Ivana Carina Jofré, the Multiannual Project (PIP-CONICET) (2023/2025) “Ethnography of heritage processes in San Juan and La Rioja (Argentina)”.
