Households in the parish of San Sebastián in the city of Puebla, ethnic and social dimensions, 1790

Abstract
By exploiting a population census drawn up in 1790 under the administration of Viceroy Revillagigedo, the size and structure of households in the parish of San Sebastián in the city of Puebla are examined. The analysis of the information was approached from the methodology proposed by Peter Laslett, which ensures comparison across time and space. From the perspective of the ethnic quality of heads of household of both sexes, gender and social status differences were identified, which had an impact on the size and composition of domestic groups. The size of the household is the most sensitive indicator: both in the parish and in different places in New Spain; households tended to be larger as the head of household climbed the social ladder. As for the composition of the units of analysis in San Sebastián, two-thirds were simple households. Through some observations, a New Spain and nineteenth-century pattern of family association living in small households, mostly with simple arrangements can be observed, although certain social and regional variations should not be overlooked.
