Abstract

I am an anti-extractivist feminist, musician and farmer. My music is the result of the experiences of my fellow brothers and my own, with it we support the defense of water and the territory we inhabit, as women and musical dissidents who fight for our spaces also as artists-creators. Singing with a box is an expression to express our feelings.

Karina Martinelli, Red Plurinacional de Feministas Antiextractivistas del Sur

I am an anti-extractivist feminist, a musician, and a small-scale farmer. My music stems from the lived experiences of my fellow comrades and siblings—as well as my own—and through it, we uphold the defense of the water and the territory we inhabit; we do this as women and gender-diverse musicians fighting for our spaces as artists and creators, too. Singing with the caja drum is a way to express our deepest feelings, which is why we embrace this form of expression. This vidala song arises in response to dispossession, pain, and the disregard for what is vital—in the face of attacks on our bodies and territories. Yet, I also want to sing for those who put their bodies on the line every day, sustaining the creation of another possible world through their sheer will and conviction; their strength is reflected in every daily act, in every individual or collective deed. These are difficult times. But we hold each other up—we comrades in the struggle—sharing ideas and emotions and learning that everything must be reconfigured, especially our bonds with one another and with Pacha (Mother Earth). That is our challenge; for my part, I approach it through music, my farm, and my activism...
