Between Two Lives: The Beauty Of Art Through Kant And Baudelaire TRAZOS

Abstract
This essay contends that beautiful art can help human beings both
to reconcile with their surrounding reality and to dream with its evasion. For that,
I draw from Kant and Baudelaire’s notes on beauty and propose an analysis of
two well-known contemporary artworks. On the one hand, I claim that Christo and
Jeanne-Claude’s The Floating Piers fits well with Kant’s notion of beauty, taken as
an expression of harmony that reduces de subject-object distance. On the other
hand, I argue that Teresa Margolles’s En el aire evokes the poignant and eerie
beauty valued by Baudelaire. In both cases, I suggest that these artworks can
also bring about traces of the alternative conception of beauty. With that I intend
to show that beautiful art can enrich the two lives of any human being: the one that
he/she lives and the one he/she dreams of.
