The Explicit Recognition Of Subjection To Authority: An Interpretation Based On Alfred Schutz’s Phenomenology

Abstract

According to Alfred Schutz, the structures of the everyday life-world
include institutional relations of authority. These structures are for the agent
objective meaning-contexts with which he interprets his situation and which he
usually takes for granted; he tacitly recognizes his subjection to authority. In this
paper I will try to give an account of the explicit recognition of subjection to authority.
I will start from the we-relation, in which the subjective meaning-context has for
the agent preeminence over the objective meaning-context. The final situation will
be the “direct” they-relation, in which the subjective context has been diluted in
favor of the objective relation of authority. I will propose that the passage from one
situation to the other may be motivated by the explicit exercise of authority in the
form of the command, which produces in the subordinate the explicit recognition
of the objective relation between his role and the superodinated role of the other.
