Abstract

Analyzing the historical development of the various artistic movements that have flourished in the West, from Antiquity to the present day, it becomes clear that the concept of "art" has not always been the same. Even today, contemporary art presents us with a diversity of artistic productions to which the same categories that once characterized artistic endeavor—beauty, harmony, purity, and a long list of concepts that have been associated with art and aesthetic experience for centuries—can hardly be applied. These concepts now demand a re-evaluation.
