THE INFLUENCE OF MICHEL FOUCAULT IN THE TAMING OF CHANCE

Abstract
This article aims to give an account of Michel Foucault's influence on one of Ian Hacking's writings, The taming of Chance (2006). More specifically, in the philosophical project that Hacking attempts to accomplish in this book and in the methodology he uses to carry it out. The author's project consists of analysing concepts such as physical determinism and indeterminism, chance, statistical law, information and control. This analysis has a clear foucauldian connotation since, in order to perform such a task, Hacking traces the conditions of possibility of these concepts. For the purpose of developing a conceptual analysis that attends to the conditions of possibility, he employs the archaeological and genealogical methods elaborated by Foucault. Thus, this article seeks to highlight the foucauldian imprint of the project and to identify the applications of archaeology and genealogy within the work.
