Abstract

We present the problems and methodological decisions arising from the approach to the Ana María Barrenechea Archive, specifically the epistolary correspondence of Domingo F. Sarmiento between 1852 and 1861, donated in 2024 to the “Manuel Alvar” Institute of Linguistic and Philological Research (INILFI) of the National University of San Juan. From an interdisciplinary perspective that articulates new political history, intellectual history, and discourse analysis, a conceptual framework is proposed to address Sarmiento’s discursive strategies as practices for building an intellectual network and legitimizing a national project. Our article focuses particularly on the challenges posed by the fragmentary and heterogeneous nature of the epistolary archive, as well as the decisions we have made to work with absences and presuppositions. Based on academic approaches, the article reflects on the possibilities for the didactic transposition of this work at secondary and university levels.
